Today the team releases 3.0, the Animation Release. Wrapping up a year of work, this is a really big release: animation support integrated into ’s core, Instant Preview for better performance painting and drawing with big brushes on big canvases, ported to the latest version of the Qt platform and too many bigger and smaller new features and improvements to mention!
Many of the new features were funded by the 2015 Kickstarter campaign. A big thank-you to all our backers! The remaining stretch goals will be released with 3.1, later this year. And don’t forget that we’ve still got seven days in the current kickstarter campaign, We’re nearly funded, so there should still be time to reach some stretch goals this year, too!
Note: 3.0 load and saves its configuration and resources in a different place than 2.9 so it’s possible to use both versions together without conflicts. Here is a tutorial on migrating resources.

On Windows, supports Wacom, Huion and Yiynova tablets, as well as the Surface Pro series of tablets. Trust, Bosto, Genius, Peritab and similar tablets are not supported at this moment because we lack testing hardware that allows us to reproduce reported bugs.
The portable zip file builds can be unzipped and run by double-clicking the link. If you want to use the installer builds, please uninstall 2.9 first.
For Windows users, Alvin Wong has created a shell extension that allows you to preview images in Windows Explorer. You can install it separately, but it is also included in the setup installers.

For Linux, we offer AppImages that should run on any reasonable recent Linux distribution. For Ubuntu 12.04 and CentOS 6.x you need the appimage that is built without support for OpenMP. We are working on updating the Lime repository: for now, you can use that to install the 3-testing build. Helio Castro is packaging for Redhat/CentOS/Fedora.
You can download the appimage, make it executable and run it in place. No installation is needed. At this moment, we only have appimages for 64 bits versions of Linux.

You can also get from Ubuntu’s App Store in snap format, thanks to Michael Hall’s help. Note that you cannot use the snap version of with the NVidia proprietary driver, due to a limitation in Ubuntu and that there are no translations yet.
On OSX will be fully supported with version 3.1. 3.0 for OSX is still missing Instant Preview and High Quality Canvas scaling. There are also some issues with rendering the image — these issues follow from Apple’s decision to drop support for the OpenGL 3.0 compatibility profile in their display drivers. We are working to reimplement these features using OpenGL 3.0 Core profile. For now, we recommend disabling OpenGL when using on OSX for production work. for OSX is tested on 10.9 and 10.11 since we do not have access to other versions of OSX.
A source archive is available for distributions wishing to package 3.0. If you’re a curious user, it is recommended to build directly from the git repository instead, so you get all fixes daily fresh. See David Revoy’s guide for an introduction to building . If you build from source and your version of Qt is lower than Qt 5.6.1, it is necessary to also rebuild Qt using the patches in /3rdparty/ext_qt.

Open up a new document by going to File>New. To control the size of the canvas, you can select from one of the templates in the Predefined drop-down menu, or either change the dimensions yourself. Choose either pixels or inches for your dimensions and set the canvas size to the ratio you want. I prefer a larger file size, no smaller than 3, 000px on the shortest size but no larger than 7, 000px on the longest. Finally, set your Resolution either to 300 or 600; the higher resolution, the greater quality for the final image.
On the left-hand side is the Toolbar. I'll be pointing out some of the tools you're likely to use the most. The Freehand Brush tool is what you're going to be doing all your painting and drawing with. Underneath that, the Transform tool is a handy feature for selecting and changing the size or shape of a section. The Gradient tool and Fill tool are useful for filling in large sections with colour, and the Color Selector tool is necessary for blending when painting. The Outline Selection tool make selecting a specific part of your piece easy, and is often used in conjunction with the Transform tool.

On the right-hand toolbar is the Advanced Color Selector, Layers panel, and Brush Presets. Using a colour wheel makes shifting hues easy, as well as useful for setting up complementary tones. The Layers panel enables you to create either new paint, mask, or filter layers, giving you full control of your canvas. Lastly, the Brush Presets makes it possible to quickly look through and select brushes. You can filter by types of brushes, or select your favourites for quick access.
By selecting the Freehand Brush tool and clicking the Edit Brush Settings button on the top toolbar, you'll see a large variety of customisation options for your selected brush. The two features that you'll mostly be using will be the Opacity and Size filters. Make sure that Pressure is selected for either of them, depending on what kind of brush you're using, so that Krita syncs up to your tablet properly.
When you're ready to save your canvas, go to File>Export and select your preferred file type. I usually stick to JPEG format unless I'm exporting a file with transparency, in which case I'll use a PNG file and make sure I have an alpha channel selected.
